Jaz is a rescue ex-wild tawny owl and came to me in the spring of 2005 as a chick from the World Owl Trust. He had been picked up as an assumed orphan owl in a Cumbrian woodland by humans that should have left him alone. He was kept for a couple of days and by the time his captors brought him in to the W.O.T. , Jaz was too tame to release back to the wild.

Bracken and Misty are both captive bred owls from registered breeders and were acquired in 2006.

My owls are handled by me regularly and hence are very tame and meet the public at talks and owl prowls. However I have a policy of ‘look don’t touch’ and really don’t approve of the few owl keepers who allow public to stroke their birds - I consider this bad practice - locally we call this practice ‘Maul an Owl!’

Owls look very cute and people often often ask “where can I get one?”.

The answer is that we are specialist birds,  we are dirty, smelly, need big aviaries and can be dangerous if not handled regularly by someone with experience - we do not make good pets - if you love us, come and see us at Ian’s events or at your local bird of prey centre - if you want a pet, get a goldfish!!
